The Florida Keys and Key West is a magnificent fishery. Within a short boat ride anywhere in the keys you can either fish for Bonefish, Permit, or Tarpon in the back-country or target larger Pelagic species such as Marlin, Dolphin, and Sailfish offshore.
The first questions you should ask when planning a fishing trip to Key West is what fish you plan to target and how you plan to catch them. Depending on the time of the year, you may be better suited to fish for one species than another. Also, depending on how you plan to fish (fly fishing or conventional rod and reel) there are times during the year better suited to each.
The fishing in Key West is arguably the best in the world, but it is also a tough place to master. If you can afford it, I would suggest hiring a local fishing guide to ensure your day on the water goes as you have dreamed. We all know getting and staying in the Florida Keys and Key West is expensive enough and a day with a guide may not fit into everyone’s budget.
